On November 11th, we held Dare to Dream, an event for single moms, for the first time at Crossroads AG in Newburgh. Lois Breit, a US missionary to single moms ministered on forgiveness and how to live, laugh and love again. There were women who came as far as 3 hours away to be part of a day that would inspire them to let go of the things that bound them as a single parent and to believe God that He would help them dream again.
The following breakouts were taught:
Advice You Can Bank On by Thrivent Financial
Buy Light, Eat Right taught by Melissa Sanabria. This breakout included tips on couponing and eating right.
The Power of One Parenting taught by Brenda Cates
Be Life Confident was taught by a professional counselor, Kristina Ruiz.
The ladies were given several options of activities to take advantage of. We had pampering sessions that included facials, manicures and hair styling. The Diva Boutique, a room filled with clothes, shoes, jewelry, coats, purses and scarves was such a Godsend to them. One single mom commented to the volunteer “I can’t believe there are slippers. I am so excited. I’ve never had slippers before.”
Free babysitting was included as part of the day. Crossroads provided a “candy bar” where the ladies could fill a bag with candies to take home. The women had a full breakfast and lunch. At each session, giveaways were done and each lady also received free full-size Mary Kay products and Bath and Body items that were donated. It was one of the most fulfilling events that I feel we have executed over the past years. They were thrilled to be leaving with their shopping bags full of clothes, perfumes, giveaway prizes, etc.
An email was sent to me quoting one of the participants:
"So I had a lot of fun today. I went to a Dare to dream single moms day with some of the other women from my church and it was a really good word. The pampering session was nice. I got my hair done, nails painted and my make up done (the used rhianna's fenti line i guess that's a big deal). I got a class on finances and budgeting and another class on couponing that was really informative and then another really good word of encouragement. Lois Breit I'm excited to start the devotionals i got from this event. They even had a Diva Boutique so i was able to get some really cute earrings and the winter coat I desperately needed. It was truly a great experience. I wish I could have gone to the Power of One parenting class but over all I'm really happy I went. But as crazy as my kids drive me, I realized how much I missed them once I didnt have them. Today was such a good day." They definitely left with their hands and hearts full! In words stated below, it is time the church recognizes the single mom as an entity. Let's strive to befriend and minister to the single moms in our local churches. Want ideas?
